The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) estimates that nearly 100 million sharks are estimated to be killed each year. The real figure could be anywhere between 63 and 273 million sharks each year. The shark fin trade accounts for around 73 million shark mortalities every year.
Apparently in comparison, sharks kill on average 12 humans per year worldwide.
One obvious action that individuals can take to stem the shark fin trade is to refuse to eat at restaurants that serve shark fin.
